Thursday 19th August, Glasgow Caledonian University
This workshop will be an initial scoping event to explore challenges and opportunities facing Scotland’s historic environment and sector.
The BEFS Business Plan identifies key challenges for the Historic Environment sector including:
- the need for the Historic Environment sector to integrate more effectively with other overarching environmental and related issues (e.g. land use, natural environment, regeneration, planning, climate change)
- concerns already raised by HEACS, HS, members and other Historic Environment stakeholder interests in a series of recent reports that require follow up actions (for example building Historic Environment capacity at local levels; volunteering; and climate change)
- the changing and uncertain landscape within the Historic Environment and Built Environment sectors (A+DS; Lighthouse; NTS etc).
This initiative supports in particular BEFS Business Plan objectives 3: To support member organisations to build their capacity and operate more strategically and efficiently. It contributes to a range of outcomes identified in the Plan including:
- Capability of members to operate more strategically and effectively improved
- Collaborative working strengthens work of individual members and results in more than the sum of their parts
- Increased efficiency and capacity for communication across the sector
- Decreased duplication across sector
- Enhanced stakeholder understanding of government objectives and policy intent
- More understanding of the sector’s priorities by HS and government
- Recognition of and engagement with the historic environment in other areas of national policy development
